1) Farming (although that's not as lucrative as it used to be) - killing certain foes with a certain build over and over again for their drops.
2) Power-trading: buy low, sell high. You have to be a very patient person for this.
3) Luck... at least in the old days, a few nice drops could make you very good money.

and... 4) sadly - eBay or other gold-selling sites. This is against the EULA of the game and can get you banned. but it does happen.

There's quite a few "farming spots" and builds. It all depends on your profession, the campaign you own, and how far along you are. You have to be level 20 first. Check out the farming section in "The Campfire" forums. How much money you can make also varies. Most are a few plat per hour. You also have to either vary where you farm or limit how often, as you can initiate GW's "anti-farm code" in which monsters will drop less and less loot.

There is also the conservative way...

Don't buy 15k armor. 1k is fine
Don't buy highly sought weapon skins. Get collector weaps/farm your own greens. Sell any popular ones you happen to get.
Upgrade your weapons/armor with the best you can salvage for expensive runes. Buy needed runes from trader only if they're cheap.
Don't buy keys / open chests.

Get as many skills as you can from quests. Carefully buy skills getting those that will improve your character and give you interesting play options. This is really the one area you should spend gold freely as it will make the game more interesting and it improves your experience in a meaningful way. Never hesitate to drop the plat for a promising new skill.

I've played for a bit over year, including a 3 month break, and never farmed until hard mode came along. I have 10 characters, all of whom have completed NightFall and most of whom have completed all three chapters. All 10 have fully equipped heroes with Max runes and max weapons. Last week, I hit the strorage limit of 1,000K.

If you can resist the temptation to always participate in the latest trend, money in GW will never be an issue.

The rich got rich through playing the market and many other things including the old farm days and etc. Guildwars for a while made a lot of people rich untill arena net finally brought down their series of blows to such schemes.

Saving gold by setting goals is my way of doing this.
I don't have 300K in storage, but could easily have it considering I burned more than 200K on cap sigs on elites for the titles.

Copy of my reply coming from another thread....

I give you my clue for FREE ........its a gold mine.

We have 10 fingers & only 1 brain LOL .....+ a LIMITED amount of playing time

So you have to make logical/rational choices linked to the GOALS you want to achieve....you follow me?

I play GW since the 11th of may 2005 & I personaly have ONE & ONLY one lvl20 pve character. I completed the 3 stand alones with this character and I rock, believe me. As soon as the game is released I buy it, and I play + I have fun + you can PUG + the map is virgin LOL (i was among the first to do Urgoz & The Deep) + all the wise players STRANGELY aggro together = YOU get rich ....do you still follow me?

So you create an advantage that will help you to level up other characters, and much much much much quicker than creating one character for each profession you like.

My girl friend has 3 characters, friends 3 and there is one spot left for one PVP character.

This is my way of playing GW, cause I hate redoing what I have done ONCE. same for films, I hate to watch a film more than one time.

My safes/mules LOL are stuffed with gold, purple and few greens and rare items = I dont need to lose my time spamming main channel with dozens of WTS + all my heroes have max lvl + best equipment possible.

The only things I ever bought were cc alias candy canes

This is the trick and dont complain cause I HM with heroes + henchies + lockpits = I have gold and purple drops each time.

And every month I make my treasure tour which cost nothing and bring me good drops too + money...less than before but still good.

I solo smites in UW from time to time when I need cash for lockpits LOL and I have 805K in bank.

I never make what you call a REAL BARGAINING trade, I give items for free and sell them 50% off the market price to mates.

I've currently got a little over 200k in the bank - had around 300k but alas some nice shiny new armor caught my eye and I finally started playing my last character (had to equip her heroes). The vast majority earned after Nightfall, a little over 100k of it since Hard Mode and the loot scale. None of it "elite" areas - I *hate* farming the UW, FoW, or the Canthan elite areas. In fact, I tend to farm while watching TV an usually consuming alcohol so the builds/runs need to be easy to use. I average around an 1.5 hours of game time a day, usually 20-30 minutes of it farming.

I'm not going to go over builds, spots, or tactics - look at the farming sub-forum for more information than I can possibly give. There isn't a thing or place I farm that isn't in that forum. Though I highly suggest that you not really bother with farming until you unlock Hard Mode - you do not need the gold until then (and once one character beats the game *all* others have access to HM).

Mainly start with a cheap farming build - a 55 necro and a 130 dervish. Both can clear quite a few places on their own and both are well within affording just from normal play. It shouldn't take too long with either to make enough for a 55 monk - between the three there are VERY few spots that you can not quickly clear.

And, the last piece of advice - set money goals. If I do not do that I never accumulate gold. Say, to start with I had a 40k limit - I only dipped into that for "emergencies" (say that a festival event needs you to purchase something) or things that were account wide (say, the skills needed to farm a place). Each time you reach this goal set the next, it is up to you when to stop.

You *MUST* stick to this. If you are like me and you really need to spend some as you go along wait until you reach that goal and *only* spend what you get over that. I generally found that a lot of things I purchased were a waste and tended to not be used or go back the trader. Waiting until I had "extra" money usually meant that the impulse stuff went away and the true wants stayed. With a specific goal I also had to think "Do I want silver dyed armor for a few weeks or 50k in the bank" - if there was no real goal then the dye tended to win

In this way I accumulated gold and still equipped myself with vabbian on one character, 15k on four (though one had been purchase WAY back), 8 characters with fully equipped heroes, and over 300k in the bank. Though 200k is my long term goal to keep in storage, anything over that tends to get spent. Though once GWEN comes out and I see what armors are going to be around I will blow through all of that (either on armor or titles).

Also, play the game how you want to...you can get money just by playing the game for fun (storyline, etc)

money isn't everything...especially on a video game (imo, money is nothing in Guild Wars in particular)
